Holy Week in Ayamonte

Holy Week in Ayamonte, declared of National Tourist Interest, is one of the most beautiful and deeply rooted religious and cultural celebrations in Andalusia and in all of Spain. It is a centuries-old tradition: over 500 years of history and numerous brotherhoods active since the 16th century. It stands out for the artistic quality of its images, the fervour in its streets and the great devotion of its people.

The processions begin on Palm Sunday and reach days of great solemnity and devotion on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. The celebration commemorates the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ through an impressive display of faith, Baroque art and popular tradition that mobilises the whole city. For a full week, the town becomes a stage where the religious and the cultural blend in its narrow streets. The heart of the festivity are the processions of the 9 penitential brotherhoods that march every day from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.

Ayamonte has a feature that sets it apart from the rest of the country: it is the only place where two different “Holy Burials” process. It happens on the night of Good Friday, when the Brotherhood of Mayor Dolor and the Brotherhood of Soledad simultaneously bring out their own representations of the Recumbent Christ, turning that night into a moment of unmatched beauty.

The celebration is also experienced with different sensibilities depending on the day. Silence and reflection: in processions such as the one of Silence (Holy Thursday), the street lights go completely out and all you hear is the rhythmic step of the bearers, the chains of the penitents and the moving sound of the matraca, an ancient wooden instrument announcing the passing of the Lord. Music and popular devotion: other days stand out for the roar of the brass bands, the cheers to the floats and the spontaneous singing of saetas from the balconies of the old town.
